The fan in your computer makes enough noise that most microphones will pick up the noise.
We have found that the Labtec Verse 504 is a huge improvement. It is a directional mic that comes with its own stand which you place on your desk about 6 inches from your mouth. It is available anywhere from $6-10. There are other brands available although we have not tried them.
If you are using the mic that is built-in to the webcam, you can try moving the camera away from the computers so that it will pick up less fan noise.
In order to tell your system which mic you are using, go to the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel, select Voice tab and then select the appropriate device in the Voice Recording device pull-down. If your webcam has a mic, it will show up here along with the name of the recording device built into your computer. In mine, it is something called "Sigma Tel Audio".
